Subjective experiences in adults’ successful inner development beyond distressing anomalous states – PhD research by Dave Barton, 2026

Do you remember that one of our original Proud Emergees, Dave, put out this call for research participants? https://emergingproud.com/2021/06/24/opportunity-to-take-part-in-doctoral-research-into-anomalous-states-and-personal-development/

Well Dave has just completed his PhD – Congratulations Dr Dave!

When I asked Dave to give us a peek into his study, he said:

A friend of mine had a crisis when he was 20 and has been under, often forced, psychiatric “care” for 50 years. He said: “there has got to be a better way”

Due to my own range of uncommon experiences I  have been a participant in a hearing voices group for 10 years.

This thesis concerns how individuals with existentially challenging experiences managed to create lives they considered successful.

With extraordinary courage and perseverence they are now able to live harmoniously with their experiences and also have a rewarding everyday life.
